NECC 2007 is the 28th Annual National Educational Computing Conference to be held in Atlanta, June 24 - 27, 2007. On Monday, June 25, 4:45 PM to 6:15 PM, I will be moderating a "Birds of a Feather" session on "Technology Topics for School Administrators". At a Birds session conference participants gather to discuss a topic of special interest.
Here is a brief description of the session:
"School Administrators and their technology related needs might be the single most important thing affecting technology integration in their schools. How are school administrators prioritizing and advancing in their knowledge and understanding of the technology topics that most affect teaching, learning and leading in their schools?"
On this page I will start gathering topics and resources leading upto the conference. Please feel free to comment and contribute.

NCLB has made it imperative for administrators to use data to drive instruction. Data Driven Decison Making (D3M) has become a household word in schools. A data dashboard simplifies quickly drilling into specific data and using the data to identify varaiables that affect student achievement. What technology solutions are districts using? Do they like what they have? What are their best hopes and worst fears?
Comments: At Scholastic for Administrators you can read several case studies about data dashboard software by districts that are already using them. Author: Susim Munshi Contact Information:skmunshi@cps.k12.il.us

Do I need a home page? Every administrator should have one! How do I get started? Resources for a quick and dirty home page that everyone will want to come back to.
Comments: A web presence or home page is not necessarily your autobiography. It can also be your professional diary. A blog would be a logical place to start. Read the Goochland blogs. Author: Susim Munshi. Contact Information:skmunshi@cps.k12.il.us
Comments:The journaling concept is quite valuable. Each year I promise myself that I will better document all aspects of my job, but reality quickly sets in and I do not prioritize my own reflection. I feel that I am taking time away from problem solving when, in reality, the reflection time would benefit my overall practice. I don't know that I would make this type of blog a public document, but I certainly see its merit. Author: Susan Contact Information: (Recommended)
Comments: Have you considered using a web authoring tool that allows your school community to become a part of your school web site content by submitting news, articles, etc? I taught at Loyola High School, Jamshedpur, India. The school web site allows alumni and faculty (current and past) to contribute to the web site using PHP web authoring tools. Notice the login section on the landing page which allow a registered user to submit items for publication.

Top Topic: Boxes and Wires - The Network Challenge
Who calls the shots when it comes to network security and infrastructure in you school or district? For a safe and reliable instructional climate, administrators need to be on top of network policies and procedures. You require a basic working knowledge of boxes and wires, firewalls and network. Where do you begin?
Comments:The district offices tend to call the shots with regards to network security and infrastructure. From managing the firewall to justifiying building infrastructure needs (i.e., how eRate funds will be used), the district has a great level of control. The best place to begin as a school administrator is to hire really great people at the building level!

Top Topic: There is eLearing; Then there is eWaste!
Description: You have made huge investements in technology BUT are not seeing the returns. What should have been eLearning has become eWaste! We are not talking about obsolete equipment here. No amount of technology can improve schools, until principals and superintendents oversee changes in instructional practices. What are you doing to avoid eWaste?
Comments: How about wireless connectivity on school buses? That would increase student productivity. It would make me feel better about TOC than seeing all the eWaste in so many classrooms. Read all about buses in Grapevine, Arkansas. Author: Susim Munshi Contact Information:skmunshi@cps.k12.il.us
Top Topic: National Education Technology Standards (NETS) for Students (NETS.S), Teacher (NETS.T), & Administrators (NETS.A)
Description: NCLB (No Chicld Left Behind)mandates that by the time students graduate from 8th grade they will demonstrate proficiency in the NETS.S. What is your school (or disctrict) doing to assess student, teacher and administrator technology proficiency and providing student curriculum and professional development?
Comments: The Chicago Public School NETS for Students is a two-fold approach developed to ensure that every student in the district achieves technology literacy in accordance with Title IID of NCLB. The Web-based National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS-S) Assessment is designed to provide baseline data regarding students’ technology literacy proficiency. The NETS Technology Literacy Curriculum (TLC) is aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards and addresses core curricular content and technology literacy concepts to develop technology literacy proficiency including IC3 Certification, a globally recognized basic-skills certification.
